More New Yorkers are getting screened for breast cancer.

The state reports that 81.9% of women ages 50–74 are up to date with screenings—surpassing the national goal of 80.3% for the first time since 2020.

Governor Kathy Hochul expanded insurance coverage for these screenings last year.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in New York State. Each year, about 17,000 women are diagnosed, and 2,500 die from the disease.

Women are encouraged to get a mammogram every other year from ages 40 to 74. This recommendation also includes transgender men and nonbinary people assigned female at birth.
