ALBANY, N.Y. — New rules are coming for drivers in New York with higher point values for some of the most serious traffic violations.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles said the changes will start Feb. 16.

The new regulations will also extend the time frame for the DMV to take administrative action against drivers with repeated violations, moving from an 18-month period to a 24-month period.

Many point assignments will stay the same, including five points for using a mobile phone or portable electronic device while driving and zero points for equipment violations.

The table below from the DMV lists the points for each violation.
