Alysa Liu is back for Round 2.

The 20-year-old figure skater from California debuted at her first Olympics in 2022 in Beijing. At just 16 years old at the time, she stunned the skating world by retiring from the sport.

“I started when I was 5 and I basically didn’t stop until 16, and I was homeschooled my whole life,” Liu explained to NBC News about her decision to retire. “And I’m a very social person. I crave human connection. And I was living by myself for many years, no family, no friends around, all for the sake of training.”

Now, four years later, she has not only re-entered the sport, but steps onto Olympic ice as the reigning world champion.
