A New York City eatery specializing in northeastern Chinese cuisine will be heading across the Hudson River later this year, as Dong Bei will be setting up shop on a historic Downtown Jersey City corner.
Per a post from the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District, the restaurant is coming to the ground floor of 500 Jersey Avenue. The space has been vacant since local favorite The Kitchen Step closed last fall after a decade-long run, leaving a void along the road’s corner with Wayne Street.
Dong Bei operates three Manhattan locations, the most recent of which opened in the Financial District just a few weeks ago. Their dishes are rooted in Manchurian culinary traditions with a menu that includes everything from classics like succulent braised pork ribs to hand-pulled noodles and savory dumplings.

The restaurant boasts a pretty extensive selection with beef, chicken, lamb, seafood, pork, veggie, tofu, and BBQ skewers among the many options. Dong Bei’s Manhattan locations also offer a lunchtime bento box that might make its way to the Jersey City location.
Besides the food, the beverage program at Dong Bei consists of craft cocktails, regional beers, and a selection of Chinese baijiu, perhaps making them an heir apparent to the dearly departed Golden Cicada. Rest in pieces.
An opening date for the Jersey City spin on Dong Bei has not yet been announced, but the restaurant does already include Jersey City as one of their locations on their delivery portal. They can be followed on Instagram at the handle @dongbei_restaurant_bar for further updates.
