The popular K-pop group LE SSERAFIM is gearing up for the release of their upcoming single, “SPAGHETTI,” and fans were pleasantly surprised to see that the teaser video that they released on Tuesday featured a drag queen.
South Korea is still one of the many countries where same-sex marriage is not legally recognized, and there are still no comprehensive laws to protect LGBTQ+ residents against discrimination.
This wildly popular K-pop group, including a drag performer in their video, led to a wave of praise from their fans online.
In the teaser, only one drag queen was featured, NANA Youngrong Kim, but in the credits of the YouTube video post, the group shared the names of two other queens that will be featured in the video: KYAM and RINGRING.
“One thing about le sserafim is they’ll always include the girls & the gays,” one person’s post on X reads.
Another person shared screenshots of LE SSERAFIM showing support for the LGBTQ+ community on various occasions. One of the legible quotes in the screenshots includes a positive review of an LGBTQ+ Japanese movie written by Sakura while she worked in media.
She wrote in her review, “People who are referred to as transgender, they live life while being true to their hearts and there are many who think of being transgender as part of their identity.”
She continued, “Is the correct answer a male and female? There is no right or wrong answer for human emotions. Love between men, love between women, it is find if it exists. And in my opinion, Japan needs to deepen its understanding of homosexuality.”
In addition to drag queens, the group also welcomed a member of one of the most popular K-pop boybands in the world to feature in their video as well: J-Hope from BTS. The band went on a hiatus back in 2022 after achieving mainstream success because a few of the members had to complete their mandatory military service. BTS has been teasing their return with plans of a new album next year as well as a world tour. “We’ll be visiting fans all around the world, so we hope you’re as excited as we are,” the band said in a statement reported by Billboard.
The full music video for “SPAGHETTI” from LE SSERAFIM drops on Friday, October 24 at 12 a.m. EST.
