NEW YORK (PIX11) — An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for New York and New Jersey ahead of subzero temperatures and snow forecasted for the weekend.

The Extreme Cold Warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. Saturday through 1 p.m. Sunday, along with a wind advisory from 9 a.m. Saturday through midnight Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to fall as low as 12 degrees on Saturday with wind chill values between -10 and zero and wind gusts as high as 48 mph, forecasters said. Overnight hours will be even more dangerously cold with wind chills between -20 to -25.

Amid the extreme cold, snow is also forecast to begin Friday night and last through midday Saturday.

When will the snow start in New York and New Jersey?

Snow is expected to begin between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. early Saturday morning and continue through 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

New York City could get up to an inch of snow, with up to 2 inches in areas further east. Some parts of Long Island could get up to 3 inches of accumulation.

How is NYC preparing?

The New York City Emergency Management has issued a weather alert from Friday through Monday, urging residents to treat the upcoming cold snap with “seriousness.”

“These temperatures are dangerous, and even brief time outdoors can be life-threatening,” said Mayor Zohran Mamdani. “Please stay indoors when you can, look out for one another, and call 311 if you see someone who needs help or if your heat isn’t working.”

The Department of Homeless Services will maintain its 24-hour Enhanced Code Blue operations with additional warming centers. Meanwhile, the Department of Sanitation has prepared 700 salt spreaders and specialized bike lane spreaders to operate on 12-hour shifts.

A wind advisory will be in effect on Saturday from 9 a.m. through midnight.
