A member of Team USA’s figure skating group says she’s begun receiving threats after making political comments during an Olympics press conference this week.
Amber Glenn, the three-time reigning U.S. figure skating champion, took to Instagram on Saturday to share her reaction and announce a step back from social media for her mental health.
During the first days of training at the Olympics, Glenn spoke about using her platform as an athlete during a press conference with other U.S. figure skaters.
“I hope I can use my platform and my voice throughout these games to try and encourage people to stay strong in these hard times,” the 26-year-old said.
“I know people will say ‘you’re just an athlete, stick to your job and shut up about politics’ but politics affects us all. It’s something that I will not be quiet about,” she added.
Days later, the Texas native shared in an Instagram story that she had received “a scary amount of hate/threats” after making her comments.
“When I chose to utilize one of the amazing things about the United States of America (Freedom of speech) to convey how I feel as an athlete competing for Team USA in a troubling time for many Americans I am now receiving a scary amount of hate/threats for simply using my voice WHEN ASKED about how I feel,” her caption read.
“I did anticipate this but I am disappointed by it. I will be limiting my time on social media for my own wellbeing for now but I will never stop using my voice for what I believe in.”
Glenn became the first woman to win at least three straight U.S. titles since Michelle Kwan, who captured eight straight from 1998-2005. Now, she aims to make the top of the Olympic podium.
Adam Rippon joins Access Daily’s Mario Lopez and Kit Hoover to share about his podcast “My New Favorite Olympian,” which showcases up-and-coming athletes headed to the Milan-Cortina Games.
