A lot of us won’t be watching the Super Bowl because our team is in it. We might be watching for the commercials, the halftime show, or for a chance to win big money.
Football Squares are a big deal in New York and even a bigger deal when it comes to the Super Bowl, but are you breaking the law when you pay for a square?
Are Super Bowl Squares Illegal In New York State?
The answer is Yes and No.
It all depends on how you are paying out the squares. If you are paying out all the money that you collect, then “Social Gambling” is legal in New York. If you are selling squares and are keeping some of the money for yourself, then technically, what you are doing is illegal in New York State.

It is also legal to sell squares for a charity or non-profit like my son’s soccer club. If all the money collected is given to winners with the rest donated to the non-profit, it is legal to play squares in New York State.
What Are Super Bowl Squares?
If you have never seen or played squares during the football season, it is really easy to follow along.
Super Bowl Squares are basically 10 vertical columns and 10 horizontal rows, both numbered from zero to nine in a random order. One Super Bowl team gets the columns, and the other gets the rows. You get the numbers associated with your square, and if the score matches your numbers, you win.
