NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – New York City spent part of the weekend under an extreme cold warning, something we haven’t seen in more than 20 years.
It’s a warning that’s usually reserved for higher elevations and mountain areas.

What makes this weather so dangerous isn’t just the single-digit temperatures we’re feeling — it’s the wind chill. Heavy wind gusts are making it feel like negative 14 degrees in New York City.
In some of the outer suburbs, those wind chills are hitting negative 20 and 30 degrees. This could end up being a record-long cold snap for the city.
Some 17 New Yorkers have died outside during this extended stretch of brutal temperatures.
Because of this weekend’s extreme cold, Mayor Mamdani announced more emergency measures to keep people safe, including expanded shelter and hotel rooms, opening and staffing warming centers, and increasing outreach on the streets.
