The New York state Department of Transportation will spend more than $600 million on at least 180 road paving projects across the state in 2026, including efforts on well-traveled roads in the Elmira, Corning and Ithaca areas.

Under the plan, nearly 2,150 lane miles will be resurfaced in every region of the state, in addition to work already scheduled as part of DOT’s core road and bridge program, state officials said Oct. 22.

Taken together, the investments represent the most ambitious annual road resurfacing agenda ever put forward by state transportation department, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said. DOT said all the work will be completed in 2026

State eyes over 250 pavement renewal projects in 2026

Nearly $60 million will be spent on 18 projects covering 266 lane miles in the Southern Tier.

New York’s $34.3 billion, five-year Capital Plan was bolstered in the most recent state budget with an additional $800 million to augment DOT’s purchasing power.

Thanks to that funding commitment, and taking into account the DOT’s core paving program, more than 250 pavement renewal projects are planned for 2026, a nearly $1.2 billion investment that will resurface more than 4,000 lane miles, officials said.

“As someone who has ridden on virtually every mile of every state road across New York, I know firsthand every curve and every pothole, and next year we will be making an unprecedented investment to improve state roads across New York,” Hochul said in announcement event.

“New Yorkers will be seeing crews out there like never before next year, rejuvenating highways, enhancing the safety of the traveling public, and laying a solid foundation for economic development across the Empire State.”
