Queens state Sen. Michael Gianaris won’t seek reelection this year, NY1 has learned.

The powerful Democrat is second in command in the state Senate and has long been viewed as a potential successor to Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

Gianaris aligned himself with the progressive wing of the party, helping engineer the effort to retake control of the state Senate in 2018 and shepherding through legislation including bail reform and tenant protections.

He was also instrumental in launching a pilot program that created a free MTA bus route in each borough, first proposed by then-Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani.

Gianaris, who represents neighborhoods including Astoria, Woodside, Sunnyside, Elmhurst, Maspeth and Ridgewood, was first elected to the state Assembly in 2000 before winning election to the state Senate in 2010.
