STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Allan Kivlehan School, PS 6, held a library unveiling, naming and ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday to honor Lisa Marie Vecchiarelli, a beloved first grade teacher who died unexpectedly earlier this year.
Vecchiarelli taught at the Tottenville school since its opening more than two decades ago until the time of her death on Jan. 11.
A dedicated New York City public school teacher for more than 30 years, Vecchiarelli was described by PS 6 PTA President Binay Scanni as “the most amazing human being who brought light everywhere she went.”
The school community is still deeply mourning her loss, and event organizers said her passion for teaching and vibrant personality made it an easy decision to honor her legacy.
“She had a strong commitment to literacy,” shared Scanni. “One of the memories we all share of her is her infectious laugh, which could bring a smile to anyone’s face.”
Event attendees said students were naturally drawn to her warm and loving demeanor, making her a favorite among both staff and students throughout the building.
Assistant Principal Dennis Forde read a poem during the ceremony and expressed the deep sense of loss felt by the school, while Vecchiarelli’s children, Brett and Victoria, thanked the school and its teachers for keeping their mother’s memory alive.
In June, the school established an award in Vecchiarelli’s honor called “The Lisa Vecchiarelli Bright Star Award,” which was given to two fifth graders who were present at the event.
The ceremony concluded with the formal naming of the library in Vecchiarelli’s honor, accompanied by a gold plaque, serving as a lasting tribute to her impact on the school community.
