Wednesday will be blustery and cold with snow showers and lake snow. Highs will be in the 20s and low 30s, with wind chills in the teens and low 20s. Lingering snow showers on Thursday should gradually wind down through the day leading to a quieter end to the week and Valentine’s Day.

1. Syracuse council moves in new direction on license plate readers
The city of Syracuse is switching vendors for its police license plate readers. The Syracuse Common Council on Monday votes to pass an agreement with Axon to install 26 new license plate readers. The five-year agreement, which comes at a cost of $422,000, goes into effect March 1.
2. Bruce Blakeman taps Madison County sheriff as his running mate in race for N.Y. governor
New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman has chosen Madison County Sheriff Todd Hood to be his running mate, sources told Spectrum News 1 Monday. Hood’s selection came shortly after Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino withdrew his name from consideration, saying he didn’t think he could balance campaigning full-time while serving as sheriff, and it wouldn’t be fair to the people who elected him as the head Fulton County law enforcement official.
3. Lawmaker lobbying for joint NYC/Lake Placid Olympic bid
The recent upgrades at Lake Placid’s Olympic legacy sites have allowed the village to host numerous World Cup events. But could it host the Winter Olympics for the third time, following 1932 and 1980.
4. Long Island’s Ed Ra chosen to be next GOP leader of New York state Assembly
The Long Island lawmaker will replace Will Barclay, who announced late last week that he would step down as Assembly minority leader and not run for reelection this year.
5. State senators propose bills to address absenteeism in schools
Sens. Patricia Fahy and James Skoufis are introducing three bills to establish a statewide attendance dashboard, or data tool; attendance review teams; and a pilot engagement and attendance program in certain school districts. The legislation would make the commissioner of education release data about absenteeism.
6. Ghislaine Maxwell declines to answer questions from House committee, citing 5th Amendment rights
Maxwell was to be questioned during a video call to the federal prison camp in Texas where she’s serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking. She’s come under new scrutiny as lawmakers try to investigate how Jeffrey Epstein, a well-connected New York financier, was able to sexually abuse underage girls for years.
