The man accused of abusing a cat named Eva appeared in Oneida County Court.
Jonathan Sykes, 21, faces charges of aggravated cruelty to animals, overdriving, torturing and injuring an animal, and failure to provide sustenance, according to Oneida County Sheriff’s officials.
Sykes rejected a plea offer in court last week.
He is accused of abusing his cat Eva in his Kirkland home in August.
Officials said the cat suffered broken bones and internal injuries.
Now her new owner, CJ Kershner, who was initally her foster parent, had good news to share about Eva.
“I’m very pleased to report that she’s in great health and good company so I’m going to continue to do whatever I can to keep her happy, warm and safe,” said Kershner.
He said she is almost completely healed from her injuries, and she is still able to be on the move.
“No problem getting up onto kitchen counters or tables or anything like that… that’s assuming I can keep her off of my lap,” he said.
Kershner said he’s about 9 months old. When she was brought in to the vet back in August, she was around 12 weeks.
“She is affectionate, she is a little roly poly, squirmy kitten,” he said. “She’s got a little bit of wobble in her back legs from the injuries but doesn’t have any major mobility issues.”
Hearings are scheduled for March 30 to determine what evidence will be allowed in Sykes’ trial. This includes a suppression, Huntley, Sandoval and Ventimiglia hearing.
