One person has died and several others were injured during a major fire in Queens on Monday.
The FDNY first received a call about a fire at a two and a half-story home on Dongan Avenue in Elmhurst, Queens around 6:45 p.m.
FDNY Assistant Chief David Simms described the situation as units arrived as a “heavy fire,” that “quickly spread” to nearby structures.
Four people jumped from rear windows of the residence to escape while another two were rescued from the second floor by a ladder company, according to the department official,
The blaze was eventually upgraded to a four-alarm fire.
At the height of the fire, FDNY found out that two people who live in the basement of the residence were missing, according to the fire chief.
A rescue unit was sent into the partially-collapsed basement and discovered the deceased individual, who ABC7 reports is a 34-year-old woman.
In total, officials say that nine people were injured, including one firefighter. One person is still unaccounted for as of Tuesday morning.
The blaze was eventually brought under control around 1:10 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the FDNY.
“My apartment is filled with smoke so they tell us they’re gonna just tear down everything. I think they’re gonna look into my apartment. So I don’t have nowhere to go,” a neighbor told ABC7.
