A 21-year-old man has been hospitalized following a shooting in the Belmont section of The Bronx, police said.

They said that on Wednesday evening, Oct. 22, at around 8.43 p.m., officers from the 48th Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a man who had been shot in the abdomen, leg, and hand at 4575 Park Avenue. They said he was transferred to St. Barnabas Hospital by EMS and is expected to survive.

Some residents and a delivery person were seen waiting outside on the street as police guarded the entrance of the 6-story, residential building.

They said they were unaware of what happened and were just informed by police that they could not enter the building for now. They were later allowed inside but a section of the lobby remained cordoned off while detectives carried out an investigation. The shooting appears to have taken place on the first floor inside an apartment.

Another group of residents who were standing nearby the building said to their knowledge, the shooting took place inside (and not on the street). A Family Group Daycare licensed by the State of New York is located inside the building according to a sign seen outside.

Another male resident, speaking in Spanish, said he was watching TV and heard around seven shots fired. Two female residents, also speaking in Spanish, were standing in the lobby, one of whom was wearing shorts and said she was cold but could not re-enter her apartment. The other said it was the first time she recalled there being trouble in the building, and added that they had also been watching TV and didn’t know what happened. When asked, they said they didn’t hear any arguing prior to the shooting.
