1. NYPD commissioner announces training changes and 200 new Bronx officers

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch declared “the state of the NYPD is strong” in her annual address Tuesday, outlining reforms and highlighting record-low January crime data.

Tisch announced new police training and the renaming of the Police Academy for Detective Steven McDonald. The Bronx will also be split into two patrol commands and gain 200 officers.

2. Mamdani administration pressed on homeless removals amid cold snap

City Council members sharply questioned the Mamdani administration on Tuesday over whether enough is being done to bring unhoused New Yorkers indoors during weeks of freezing temperatures.

Since Jan. 19, the city has been under Code Blue or below-freezing conditions, with 18 deaths reported. Officials say state law limits involuntary removal, but reported 37 removals and 1,400 shelter placements so far.

3. N.Y. Democrats see Delgado’s exit from governor’s race as sign party is united around Hochul

Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado ended his long-shot primary challenge to Gov. Kathy Hochul, saying there was “no viable path forward.”

His departure now leaves Hochul without a Democratic challenger, signaling party unity after she secured strong convention support.

Political strategists say Hochul is politically strong, leading Republican Bruce Blakeman in early polling.
