Councilwoman Julie Won, in the cranberry coat by the bagpipers at left, joined leaders and supporters of the New York Irish Center Saturday morning as part of the intersection of 50th and Jackson avenues was co-named New York Irish Center Place.

“It’s a big city,” said George Heslin, the center’s executive director, in a press release. “What a wonderful thing to be a part of the greatness and have a sign to prove it.”

The center opened in 2005, and is located at 10-40 Jackson Ave.

Those joining the celebration included Gerald Angsley, Ireland’s consul general in New York City, standing next to Won; and Angela Reilly, the widow of co-founder Paddy Reilly.

A seven-member Irish folk band provided live entertainment.
