(WRGB) — The New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association is urging drivers to educate themselves about a major overhaul to the state’s driver license points system that takes effect Monday, February 16.

The union says the changes significantly increase penalties for several serious traffic offenses and could result in drivers reaching suspension thresholds more quickly if they are unaware of the new rules.

Under the updated system, alcohol- or drug-related incidents and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle will now carry 11 points, compared to 0 points under the previous structure.

Several offenses tied to public safety and infrastructure damage, including passing a stopped school bus, speeding in construction zones, and incidents involving over-height vehicles or bridge strikes, will now result in 8 points. The penalty for driving while using a cell phone increases from 5 points to 6 points per violation.

The threshold for license suspension is also changing. Previously, drivers faced suspension after accumulating 11 points within 18 months. Under the new rules, suspension can occur after 10 points within a 24-month period.

NYSTPBA President Charles W. Murphy said,

Historically, State Troopers bear the brunt of drivers’ frustration at traffic stops. When an irate driver realizes at the side of the road that a single citation can results in sufficient points to lose their license and drive up their insurance coverage costs, it is our members who may well face that anger. This is why it’s imperative that New Yorkers understand the changes that are about to occur.
