BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Conditions lately haven’t just been cold—they’ve been anomalously cold. We’re on a cold streak with consecutive days spent entirely below freezing.
Locations and how long they’ve been below freezing as of February 12th, 2026(Gunnar Consol)
Locations in the North Country like Saranac Lake, N.Y., and Newcomb, N.Y., have spent almost an entire month below freezing, and the streak continues. Burlington, Plattsburgh, Montpelier, and St. Johnsbury all have streaks running 21 days now.
The below-freezing conditions haven’t been quite as persistent in Southern Vermont. This has caused Rutland, Lebanon, and Bennington to experience intermittent thawing during this cold stretch.
Every streak but Bennington’s began during the middle of January after our brief January thaw:
Saranac Lake Streak started: January 16
Newcomb Streak started: January 17
Massena Streak started: January 18
Burlington Streak started: January 23
Plattsburgh Streak started: January 23
Montpelier Streak started: January 23
St. Johnsbury Streak started: January 23
Rutland Streak started: January 23 | Streak ended: February 2
Lebanon Streak started: January 23 | Streak ended: February 1
Bennington Streak started: February 2 | Streak ended: February 9
A few more days below freezing will extend these streaks before the thaw arrives next week.
