Police have released photos of the suspects sought following a shooting with a possible “gang nexus” in the Kingsbridge section of The Bronx in which three people were shot in Wednesday evening. One 16-year-old boy is deceased.

A police spokesperson initially said multiple people were shot at around 5.10 p.m. at Broadway and West 238th Street [around a block from the 50th Precinct stationhouse] and that no more information was available.

An officer on scene later said the shooting took place outside the 238 Corner Store deli located at the corner of 238th Street and Broadway.

An FDNY/EMS spokesperson said the department received a call at 5.11 p.m. for a report of a shooting at West 238th Street and Review Place (a block from Broadway). They said two people were taken to local area hospitals and their condition and description were unknown.

Another member of the NYPD on scene later confirmed three people were shot, one was dead on arrival, and two were taken to hospital.  FDNY/EMS later said a third victim had been transported [to hospital] by the NYPD before EMS arrived at the scene and that the person’s condition and description were unknown.

According to another police source, the shooters were on an elevated section of 238th Street between Putnam Avenue and John M. Collins Place / Review Place and fired the shots at the victims who were reportedly outside 238 Corner Store on the corner of Broadway and 238th Street, a distance of under 0.1 miles.

According to police, the shooting is being investigated in the context of a possible “gang nexus,” and the victims involved are young.

The NYPD press office said later on Wednesday night that officers had responded to a 911 call for multiple individuals shot at the intersection of Broadway and West 238th Street within the confines of the 50th Precinct. “Upon arrival, officers observed a 16-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the back, a 15-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the right leg, and a 13-year-old female with a gunshot wound to the right leg.”

They said EMS responded and transported all three victims to St. Barnabas Hospital where the 16-year-old victim was pronounced deceased.  They said the 13-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy are in stable condition, and added that no arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.

Police said the deceased has been identified as Christopher Redding from the Mt. Eden section of The Bronx.

Earlier on Wednesday, an NYPD female dispatcher was overheard on police radio initially telling police officers that three suspects had fled in “an unknown direction.” Moments later, an officer was overheard confirming two people were shot and CPR was in progress on one of the victims. The dispatcher was then heard updating officers and detectives, saying in part, “We’re looking for three males all wearing black.”

After a pause of several moments, the dispatcher then added in part, “We have an update in regards…we have six males wearing all black, they fled towards [West] 230 and Bailey [Avenue.] Three males, two dark skinned, and one light skinned. They hang out by Sedgwick Avenue. Level one.”

According to EMS radio, one of the victims had gone into cardiac arrest having been shot in the chest. According to the same EMS radio segment, three ambulances were given a police escort across West 238th Street towards Bailey Avenue to St. Barnabas Hospital.

One Kingsbridge resident and witness, whose name Norwood News is not disclosing for his own safety, later told us he saw the shooting happen, adding, “Yeah, sh*t, I live right there! I live right here! I was at that restaurant right there [on West 238th Street between Broadway & Review Place] with the lights in the front. So there were like four or five kids that were running this way, west [on West 238th Street] and they shot one right there. One of them got shot in the back and the other teen got shot in one of the legs.”

The witness went on to say that after firing the shots, the group ran towards Bailey Avenue and then one gunman returned to the scene before running back again towards Bailey Avenue. Asked how old the suspects were, the witness said, “Fifteen, seventeen, not even eighteen years old.”

Norwood News mentioned that a female police officer had been attacked with a bottle at the West 238th Street Subway Station a few years ago. “Yes, there’s a lot of kids fighting right here in this parking lot,” the witness said. We mentioned that this seemed odd given the 50th Precinct stationhouse was located just beyond the parking lot of the former Riverdale Diner. “The 50th Precinct is right there,” the witness agreed, adding, “Right next to McDonalds.” A fatal stabbing also took place in the vicinity of McDonalds, as reported, on June 30, 2023.

Asked if police patrol the area, the witness said, “They don’t get involved.” We asked what he meant and he said, “They’re kids.” Norwood News asked, “But they’ve got guns?” The witness replied, “It’s kids. Yes. Now they know that because someone has died.” Asked if he felt safe living in the area, the witness said, “Not really. After they closed this pharmacy [Rite Aid at West 238th Street and Kingsbridge Avenue] and the diner right here [Riverdale Diner across the street], it’s been nuts. I’m actually moving. We’ve been here for eight years. We’re moving to Westchester.”

The witness went on to say he believed the victim could not be more than 18 in his opinion. He said after police administered CPR, they took the victim to the hospital. “Just to pronounce him dead,” he added. “He just looked like he came from school and they shot him in the back. He was running, pow, pow, pow after him.”

Given some conflicting agency accounts, Norwood News has asked the NYPD / FDNY/EMS for clarification regarding who exactly administered CPR to the fatal victim and who transported him to St. Barnabas Hospital. We will share any feedback we receive.

One local deli employee working at another nearby deli on West 238th between Broadway and John M. Collins Place / Review Place, said he heard around three shots but did not see what had happened. Another man who had been inside the nearby Bronx Alehouse on 238th Street between Broadway and Putnam Avenue opposite John M. Collins Place / Review Place, said he didn’t hear any shots and just saw police arrive later.

One woman we spoke to said, “There’s always a lot of young kids gathered around here waiting for the bus after school but nothing violent. Like I know there’s fights and stuff like that but something like that around here is rare, let’s be honest. You don’t hear about a shoot-out in this area often.”

Another local resident said he avoided 238 Corner Store as he said it was often crowded, and that you never knew where deals were being made. He appeared to suggest drug deals were being struck in that vicinity.

Another local man told Norwood News he believes violence starts at home and that people are not happy in their homes or in their work and that this spills out on to the street.

Police had cordoned off the streets from Putnam Avenue as far as Broadway and 238th Street and helicopters were heard overhead in the area after the shooting, possibly with police searching for an aerial view of any fleeing suspects.

Asked for her reaction to the shooting, another female resident who said she did not see what happened and was just coming home, said, “It’s not something that shocks me. You never want to hear it. It’s not shocking. This area is really really calm. I’ve been here for almost 20 years.”

Police released photos (attached) of the suspects sought for the shooting on Thursday, Feb. 12.
