UTICA, N.Y. — A former New York State trooper has launched a campaign for Oneida County sheriff.
Jared Pearl formally announced his run at the Irish Cultural Center in Utica this afternoon.
Pearl retired last week as a senior investigator with the New York State Police after 24 and a half years.
He has 32 years of law enforcement experience overall and has served as chief of the Maynard Fire Department for 12 years.
Pearl’s family, friends and supporters, including former sheriffs, attended the announcement.
Pearl said he has wanted to be sheriff since high school.
“There’s financial responsibilities we’ve got to take on head on regards to some of the money that’s been spent on vehicles, some of the money that’s being spent on overtime,” Pearl said.
Pearl added, “Morale needs to be changed. We need to stand behind our deputies, give them a reason to support and make them want to come to work again. As you know, there was a vote of no confidence at one time.”
Pearl, a Republican, is running against Democrat incumbent Sheriff Robert Maciol, who announced his re-election campaign on Tuesday.
