NEW YORK (WABC) — The New York State of Department of Motor Vehicles is temporarily closing all offices starting Friday in order to roll out an upgrade to modernize its technology system.
Beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday, all DMV offices will be closed for business, and online transactions and phone services will be unavailable. Full DMV operations are expected to resume at the start of business on Wednesday.
The temporary closure will allow for the new system to be implemented and tested to ensure the successful resumption of services, the DMV said.
According to DMV officials, the new technology system will allow employees to process transactions more effectively and efficiently on a singular, secure platform. It will also expand online transactions, making it easier for New Yorkers to do what they need on their own time and from the comfort of their homes.
“With one consolidated, state-of-the-art system, we will be replacing hundreds of software applications, some of which date back to the days of Nelson Rockefeller,” said DMV Commissioner and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Mark J.F. Schroeder.
“I truly believe it will give our staff the ability to serve New Yorkers better, faster, and more comprehensively than ever before.”
According to the DMV, the agency has made changes in recent years to increase online and over-the-phone self-service options, help people prepare for in-person transactions and establish a robust in-person reservation system to reduce wait times at its offices.
A second major upgrade is expected to take place in 2028.
