QUEENS (WABC) — A child was rescued by a good Samaritan after falling through ice in Springfield Gardens, Queens, on Friday afternoon.

Two children were on the ice just before 3 p.m. and started to get scared.

One child ran off the ice, and the other fell through..

A 14-year-old boy was nearby and witnessed the child go through the ice and sprang into action using an ice rescue ladder station.

The ice ladder stations are around the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation parks throughout the area.

“I ran to the safety ladder just in case someone is walking on the ice and they fall through, grabbed the ladder and rushed onto the ice and slid the ladder to him, keeping the kid up. I walk past this river all the time and I always see those safety ladders,” the teenager said.

The teenager was able to keep the child above water until the fire department was able to get there and finish the rescue.

The quickthinking of the teenager saved the child’s life.

The child was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
