One of New Jersey’s most acclaimed pizzerias has opened its fifth location.

Brooklyn Square Pizza, a family-owned restaurant known for its award-winning pies, opened Feb. 2 at 1026 Broad St. in Shrewsbury, in the space formerly occupied by Federico’s.

The Shrewsbury restaurant joins existing stores in Bradley Beach, Jackson, Manalapan and Toms River. A Marlboro location is expected to open in April.

The menu features the restaurant’s signature upside-down pizza, along with a variety of specialty pies, paninis, wraps, heroes, pastas and other Italian dishes.

Owner Pietro “Peter” Grippo has been in the pizza business since 1982. He opened Brooklyn Square Pizza in Jackson in 2013, followed by Manalapan in 2017, Toms River in 2018 and Bradley Beach in 2025.

Grippo said the decision to open the Shrewsbury pizza shop was driven in part by the promise of the region’s growth with Netflix building a new mega-studio at the former Fort Monmouth property.

“There was an opportunity and I jumped on it,” Grippo said.

He noted Shrewsbury and the surrounding towns have welcomed him “with open arms,” and he hopes “Marlboro does the same.”

“I’m very blessed,” he added.

Brooklyn Square Pizza won New Jersey’s best pizzeria showdown in 2017, was named the best pizzeria in the state by Reader’s Digest in 2023 and earned the No. 7 spot on NJ.com’s ranking of New Jersey’s 101 greatest pizzas in September 2025.

The restaurant also received high ratings from Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy.
