The app “Empower” promises lower fares by giving drivers 100% of the riders’ payment, cutting out commissions and fees on both sides, and drivers just pay a $50 a month subscription in NYC. However, city officials say Empower is ‘illegal’, calling it an ‘unlicensed ride share app,’ and warn that riders may face insurance issues if they are involved in a crash.
