BATON ROUGE, La. — For the second weekend in a row, the Sam Houston bowling team will roll for a championship at the Southern Queens tournament at All Star Lanes.
 
The Bearkats remain in second place and will be seeded No. 2 in the championship bracket on Sunday. Sam Houston went 3-2 on Saturday and has 9,577 total pins behind first-place UAB which is 7-2 with 9,697 pins.
 

Jax State (9,243) is third followed by Southern (9,039), Alabama A&M (8,981), Alabama State (8,964), Texas Southern (8,679), Florida A&M (8,596) and Grambling (5,971).

“It was a heartbreaking loss to end of the day (to UAB 1,069-1,063),” head coach Brad Hagen said. “We need to get out of the gates quicker and more confidently pair to pair so we’re not in the situations where we were which bit us twice today. The talents there but we have to find a way to grow and competitively continue to be more confident no matter what’s thrown at us. The positive is we’re competing but our urgency and attention to details needs to be sharper, better, quicker, sooner and faster.”

 

The Kats had four players place in the top 20 of the individual competition on Saturday led by Miya Greene who earned all-tournament honors with a fourth-place finish and 207.20 average. Breana Chewens was 12th with a 193.20 average, Noey Sarntong was 18th with a 187.80 average and Ana Gonzales finished 20th with a 185.0 average.

The championship bracket gets underway on Sunday.
