COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 11 Ohio State (7-4, 2-1) finished their series against Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) rival Queen University of Charlotte (6-5, 1-3) with a 5-set loss on Sunday at the Levine Center in Charlotte, N.C. The Buckeyes are now 2-1 in MIVA conference play.

 

The Buckeyes and the Royals kept it close in the opening set before the Buckeyes secured the set win, 25-22. Ohio State went on to win the second set, 25-20, before dropping sets three and four to the Royals, 25-22 and 25-20. In extra points, the Royals took the fifth set 18-16.

 

The Buckeyes were led in kills by Daniel Hurley with 21. Ian Nolte added 11. Brady Jones and Stanislaw Chacinski each put up 9.

 

Eliel Salva-Torres put up 8 blocks in the match. Chacinski added 5 for the Buckeyes. Nolte, Jones, and Daniel Henwood Rodriguez put up 4 block apiece.

 

Setter Henwood Rodriguez put up 52 assists in five sets. Drew Hudson lead with 8 digs, and Chacinski followed close behind with 7.

  

Set 1 (25-22, OSU)

The Buckeyes started the match strong with a consecutive kill and service ace by Daniel Hurley, 2-1. Following a few service errors by both teams, Brady Jones’ kill kept the lead for Ohio State, 5-4. Ian Nolte’s first kill of the day gave the Buckeyes a two-point lead, 7-5. Kills by Nolte and Eliel Salva-Torres extended the lead, 10-7. A huge right-side kill by Hurley kept the lead, 12-9. Daniel Henwood Rodriguez added a kill of his own with a setter dump, 15-11. A massive kill out of the middle from Jones continued the Buckeyes’ lead, 17-14. The Royals went on a small run to get them within one-point, 21-20. Another kill by Hurley from the outside pushed the Buckeyes ahead by two, 22-20. Hurley’s kill from the right-side gave Ohio State their first set point, 24-22. The Buckeyes won the first set off a massive backrow attack by Stanislaw Chacinski, 25-22.

Set 2 (25-20, OSU)

Smart ball placement by Hurley put Ohio State on the scoreboard first, 1-0. A costly overpass by the Royals was converted into a backrow kill by Nolte, 4-2 Buckeyes. Hurley tooled off the block for another kill to continue the Ohio State lead, 11-8. Salva-Torres and Chacinski put up a massive block for the 13-9 lead. A successful challenge by the Buckeyes kept their lead, 15-14. A massive block by Salva-Torres and Henwood Rodriguez furthered the lead, 21-18. Another service ace by Nolte gave Ohio State their first set point, 24-19. The Buckeyes won set two with a successful challenge, 25-20.

Set 3 (25-22, Queens)

The Buckeyes started the third set with a small run, 3-1. The Royals went on a run of their own that gave them a one-point lead, 4-3. Another backrow kill by Hurley tied it at 5-all. Henwood Rodriguez and Jones put up another block for an 8-6 Buckeye lead. Hurley put up another massive right-side kill down the line that kept the Ohio State lead, 11-10. A huge solo block by Salva-Torres gave the Buckeyes a two-point advantage, 13-11. A five-point run by Queens ended in a successful joust by Henwood Rodriguez, 16-14 Royals. Chacinski put up another kill that started to close the scoring gap again, 18-16 Queens. Another Queens service error got the Buckeyes within one-point, 21-20. Great block coverage by the Buckeyes cut the Royals’ lead to two-points, 23-21. The Royals take set three, 25-22.

Set 4 (25-20, Queens)

Ohio State started set four strong with a triple block by Salva-Torres, Nolte, and Hurley, 1-0. A great set by Henwood Rodriguez to Nolte on the outside gave the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead. Jones’ massive solo block extended the Ohio State lead, 5-3. The Royals went on a small run that gave them an 8-6 lead. Hurley put up another kill that started to close the scoring gap, 10-9 Royals. A great pass by Drew Hudson set up Hurley for another kill, 13-11 Queens. Owen Pickering’s well-placed kill kept the Buckeyes in it, 15-12 Royals. Queens continued their run that gave them a five-point advantage before an Ohio State timeout, 18-13. Hurley’s service ace down the sideline put Ohio State back in it, 20-17 Royals. The Royals take set four, 25-20.

 

Set 5 (18-16, Queens)

Jones’ consecutive kill and service ace put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard first, 2-0. Salva-Torres and Hurley put up a massive block that continued the lead, 3-1. The Royals tied it at 3-all. Another huge Jones and Henwood Rodriguez block kept the momentum for the Buckeyes, 6-4 Ohio State. A kill by Jones from the middle kept the two-point advantage for Ohio State before they swapped sides, 8-6. A huge dig and an even better swing by Chacinski extended the Buckeyes’ lead, 10-6. Another small run by the Royals started to close the scoring gap before and Ohio State timeout, 11-9. A necessary kill by Hurley gave the Buckeyes a two-point lead, 12-10. A joust won by the Royals tied the fifth set at 12-all. Salva-Torres gave the Buckeyes their first match point with a massive kill from the middle, 14-13. The Buckeyes and Royals pushed the fifth set to extra points, 14-all. The Royals took the fifth set, 18-16.
