As we cruise into the second half of February, the forecast across New York State is calling for a significant warm-up and sunshine. Above-average temperatures will kick off Presidents’ Day week, and those who love to snowmobile are keeping a close eye on trail conditions.
An Incredible Winter for Snow Lovers in New York State
This has been an incredible winter. Significantly cold temperatures and subzero wind chills have forced many people indoors. However, for those who love spending time outside, whether on a ski hill or riding snowmobile trails, the snow has been just about perfect.

The forecast, according to Punxsutawney Phil, is calling for six more weeks of winter. But Mother Nature may have another plan, at least in the near future, as warmer weather moves into the region.
Snowmobile and Ski Conditions Across New York
Did you get out on your snowmobile this season? Did you make it to the ski hill as often as possible?
Over the last couple of years, conditions in some areas of New York State have been very good. The lakes have largely remained open, allowing for strong lake-effect snowfall. Now that Lake Erie is freezing over, that lake-effect “snow machine” appears to be slowing down for now.
But remember, it is only February. There is still plenty of winter left, and those of us who grew up here know that weather patterns can turn around quickly.
Snowmobile Trail Closures and Safety Reminders
According to various Facebook posts from local snowmobile clubs and updates from the NYSSA, trail conditions are forcing some clubs to temporarily close portions of their systems. This is not the case for every trail across New York State, but it is important to check before heading out.
Make sure you confirm conditions with the club that maintains the trail you plan to ride. Snowmobile clubs do a fantastic job not only maintaining the trails but also building and preserving relationships with landowners who allow access.
According to the Hamburg Snowmobile Club Facebook administrator, “Well sled heads we hate to do it But trails are now closed!! It was a great run and the longest we have been able to leave the trails open without closing in several years! Let’s hope this is temporary, but most importantly we need to thank the landowners for allowing us to enjoy our sport”!
The Southern Tier Snow Drifters indicated that “We didn’t want to do it but…
With the trails showing mostly snirt in the woods and lower terrain Mother Nature forced us to close. We hope this is a temporary thing…”
Do not ride in areas that are shut down. This is not only about following the rules, it is also about safety and protecting future trail access for everyone.
