BAY RIDGE, Brooklyn (PIX11) — It’s almost that time of year when you pull out anything green in your closet and become an honorary Irish person for the day or the week or the month.

Parades celebrating Saint Patrick and Irish contributions to America are being planned in Manhattan and all the boroughs.

In Bay Ridge, a dance was held to celebrate the 51st annual Brooklyn Saint Patrick’s Day Parade.

It was a joyous night with the Canny Brothers band playing their original song, One Drop of Whiskey.

The Brooklyn Saint Patrick’s Day Parade was started in 1975, and for the last 10 years, it has been organized by women.

“We focus a lot on the history, and this year is the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn,” Mary Hogan, co-chair of the parade, told PIX11 News.

While the Brooklyn Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is much smaller and not quite so old as the Manhattan one, it makes up for it in spirit, community, and love for our family.

This year, this PIX11 reporter, a fifth-generation member of a proud Brooklyn Irish family, has the honor of leading the parade as Grand Marshal, surrounded by so many other more worthy aides and honorees.

“We are very proud of our sister, Magee, and all our family members who helped build Brooklyn,” Elizabeth Hickey Lavin, my sister, told PIX11 News.

The Brooklyn St. Patrick’s Day parade is on March 15, starting at 1 p.m.
