It seems former U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro is once again aiming to get involved in New York state politics.
A person familiar with Molinaro’s thinking told Spectrum News 1 over the weekend the Republican is planning to run for the 102nd state Assembly District, which is being vacated by Chris Tague, who is running for a state Senate seat. The news was first reported by Politico.
This comes after Molinaro announced on social media he is leaving his post as administrator of the Federal Transit Administration, which he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate for back in August.
Molinaro said his last day on the federal job will be Feb. 20 and that New York is “being run into the ground.”
After a record-breaking year working with @realDonaldTrump & @SecDuffy, my last day with the administration will be Friday, February 20th. I’m coming home to be closer to my family and get back into the fight. New York is being run into the ground. Stay tuned!

Before joining the Trump administration, Molinaro served a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives in New York’s 19th Congressional District. He won that seat in 2022 but lost reelection in 2024 in a rematch contest with Democrat Josh Riley.
Before that, Molinaro had a long history in politics. He served as Dutchess County executive, county legislator, mayor and even in the state Assembly, the office he is now interested in returning to. He was also the Republican nominee for governor in 2018.
The 102nd state Assembly District covers all of Greene and Schoharie counties, in addition to parts of Delaware, Albany, Otsego and Ulster counties.
