CLAYTON, New York (WWNY) – Students at Guardino Elementary have a new spot to read.
Thursday night, the school unveiled a new reading nook. It’s an homage to Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree,” and a tribute to beloved community member Mary Zovistoski. The kids lovingly called her “Miss Mary.”
Zovistoski passed away last year, but throughout her life she was a major advocate for childhood literacy. She helped Guardino Elementary with Jumpstart’s Read for the Record program which puts books in the hands of kids.
Guardino Elementary PTO Vice President Kelly Picunas believes Miss Mary would be proud of the new nook.
“The idea of ‘The Giving Tree’ is something that reminds us of her,” said Picunas. “She just was such an amazing supporter, a giving person and would do anything to help our school out but also anybody out. She was just a wonderful lady.”
Kids will be able to enjoy the nook when they return from mid-winter break.
