Fourth-grader, East Village

What’s your favorite trick?
I can’t decide because everything’s my favorite. But I’m learning how to do a laser heelflip. I haven’t landed it before, but I’m close.

Do you practice with your friends from school?
No, my friends at school never skate, not one single person. I’m the only one. My classmates only know about Tony Hawk and kickflips. A lot of them play soccer.

I like your jacket. Where’s it from?

Honestly, I’d have to ask my mom. My mom is a fashionista, and she has some really nice clothes. And yeah, I saw it in her closet.

Jack “Bubba Jackson” Springer

Skateboarder, Huntington Beach, California

How does this skate scene compare to California’s?

People are a lot hungrier and more competitive in Los Angeles because no matter where you’re from in the U.S., everyone thinks, Oh, I have to move out to L.A. to skate. In New York, everybody kind of seems more chill and laid-back and not as gatekeep-y about things.

Jiro Platt

Skateboarder, Lower East Side

What does a typical day look like for a full-time skater?

I wake up, make a smoothie, make eggs, make coffee. I foam-roll. I go skate. I’ll just go skate all day, then eat dinner. I’ve been going to physical therapy, too. I injured my ankle and wasn’t skating for two months. I’ve rolled my ankles so many times.

Do you ever wear a helmet?

Yeah. But this is just Brooklyn Banks, so not today. If it’s calm and I’m just having a little fun, I just wear a hat.

When did you start skateboarding?

Jahmal: In 1988. That was in New England, in Boston. It was punk rock and hardcore.
