1. $77M in federal funding restored to Gateway Tunnel Project
The Gateway Tunnel Project regained $77 million in federal funding Tuesday after more than $200 million was frozen in October, halting construction and costing about 1,000 jobs.
Union workers rallied on Manhattan’s West Side as Gov. Kathy Hochul and Sen. Chuck Schumer called the $16 billion project essential to protect 200,000 daily commuters. Schumer said the remaining $98 million should arrive Wednesday, allowing work to resume within days.
2. Mamdani eyes property tax hike if Hochul doesn’t raise taxes on wealthy New Yorkers
In his first city budget plan presented Tuesday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani argued if Gov. Kathy Hochul doesn’t agree to a tax hike on the rich, then he will have to raise property taxes on millions of city homeowners to help pay for current city expenditures as well as new expenses.Â
His preliminary plan projects a $122 billion budget by fiscal year 2026. Gov. Kathy Hochul opposes tax hikes, and City Council leaders say higher property taxes are a nonstarter. The city budget must be finalized by June 30.Â
3. Judge blocks deportation of Palestinian activist who led protests at Columbia
An immigration judge has blocked the Trump administration from deporting Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian graduate student who led protests at Columbia University against Israel and the war in Gaza.
In a ruling made public Tuesday, the judge, Nina Froes, said she had terminated the case because of a procedural misstep by government attorneys, who failed to properly certify an official document they intended to use as evidence.
