STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — It didn’t take an eagle eye to spot the good job done here.
Police officers from the NYPD’s Harbor Unit saved an injured bald eagle from the icy Hudson River on Tuesday morning.
Video footage posted to the NYPD’s social media shows the national icon trapped on a shrinking block of ice in the Hudson, with the George Washington Bridge in the background.
One officer in the video mentions that the eagle’s claw appears to be bleeding while another prepares a snare pole to grab the bird.
“I don’t want to put it too tight, just enough,” one officer in the video can be heard saying.
While the animal squawks in distress, another officer can be heard reassuring the animal that “it’s alright bro.”
After successfully looping the eagle’s body, officers pulled the bird onto their boat and covered its head with a blanket before wrangling it into a cage.
The eagle was later taken to a sanctuary in New Jersey, ABC7 reports.
