STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Free People, the popular bohemian apparel brand known for its free-spirited, romantic, and creative aesthetic, is opening an FP Movement store in the Staten Island Mall, and the brand extension — which is expected to open later this year — will bring a range of trendy activewear to the New Springville shopping hub.
“A destination for life well-lived, Free People Movement offers performance-ready activewear, practice-perfect styles and beyond-the-gym staples,” the company noted on its website.
Part of the URBN portfolio, which includes Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie, FP Movement was established as a category under Free People in 2012. It began operating as a standalone brand with its first independent brick-and-mortar stores launching around 2020. There are currently more than 200 locations throughout the United States, more than 50 of which are in California. The brand’s first NYC store opened in SoHo in 2024.
A pink-and-white decorative construction barricade has been erected in the upper level Macy’s wing where the store will be located.
Free People did not respond to a request for comment about the store’s official grand opening, but the brand explained the concept on its website as such: “Shop performance tops, bottoms, sports bras, and outerwear for your next workout, or shop by activity to find the right workout gear for however you like to move. Explore our well-loved workout sets with functional performance sets and athleisure sets for post-workout and errands. Top off your look with shoes and workout gear and accessories.”
Bestsellers on the site include oversized T-shirts, cropped joggers, logo hoodies and fleece jackets. Matching workout sets and sports bras appear to be the brand’s bread-and-butter.
