CITYWIDE — CHRISTINA MELÉNDEZ, the New York City Education Department’s deputy chancellor of Family, Community and Student Empowerment, has announced she will step down Feb. 27, Chalkbeat reported Thursday. City officials have not yet announced who will fill the position, and Meléndez did not comment on her next move.
One of Meléndez’ responsibilities in a previous role, as executive director of the NYC Public School’s Office of Family and Community Empowerment, involved overseeing the Community Education Council elections, which, according to Chalkbeat, has had “notoriously low” turnout, with only 2% of public school families participating in 2025.
