STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Rosebank North Shore Alliance Civic Association meeting Wednesday evening, staged in the cafeteria of St. Joseph’s School in the organization’s home community, featured special guests presenting to about three dozen gathered members.

A newer group, the civic association was established last year.

Who was there

Matthew Lesieur, who serves as president, opened the meeting along with Tomasz Blaszczyk, vice president, Marek Blaszczyk, treasurer and Janice Fanizzi Font, secretary.

Other executive committee members present were Robert Brooks, Charlie Olson and Katrima Zigo, who were among the 35 dedicated local residents in the room.

Representatives from the offices of elected officials, including the office of Borough President Vito Fossella, also made their presence known.

Included were updates from the offices of Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, Councilmember Kamillah Hanks, State Senator Jessica Scarcella, Assemblymember Sam Pirozzolo, and the Department of Transportation and the NYPD.

Special guests

Guest speakers included Richmond County District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, Lynda Thompson, veteran liaison for the FDNY Office of the Commissioner, and Lt. Commander Robert Anzidei.

McMahon distributed information on crime statistics, including homicides and other major crimes.

He would also elaborate on circumstances surrounding retail thefts and recent ongoing crime cases in the community of Rosebank.

“With 500,000 people on Staten Island crime is down,” McMahon noted. “And it’s a tribute to the Police Department. We work every day with Commander Melissa Eger to keep Staten Island safe. When I ran in 2015 I wanted to make sure we have the people we need. I have great partners in helping us accomplish what we need to do to keep crimes down.”

Thompson addressed the crowd in hopes of spreading awareness about the upcoming 250th anniversary of America commemorative approaching during the first week in July.

Thompson is part of the Executive Steering Committee to bring partners together to host the military — in any way possible — from July 2 to July 8, when hundreds of ships carrying thousands of sailors and soldiers from all over the world will pull into New York Harbor — as part of the grand celebration.
