NYC Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers

Last week, NYC Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers was appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2026 Race, Equity and Leadership (REAL) Council.

Brooks-Powers, who represents the eastern half of the Rockaway peninsula in Council District 31, was elected to a one-year term to develop and guide programs among local elected officials from similar communities.

“National League of Cities’ member councils design and create NLC’s policies that bring together innovative ideas and solutions to the biggest challenges facing local leaders across the country,” NLC President Kevin Kramer said. “I am thrilled to have Councilmember Brooks-Powers serve on NLC’s REAL Council this year as we work together to ensure our cities, towns and villages have the resources they need to create thriving communities.”

As a member of NLC’s REAL Council, Brooks-Powers will play a key role among a diverse group of local leaders to encourage collaboration, networking and the development of resources and programs beneficial to communities that share demographics, size or location that can be replicated across the country.

“It is an honor to serve on the National League of Cities’ REAL Council and to bring the voices and lived experiences of New Yorkers to a national table,” Brooks-Powers said. “This council provides a critical platform to collaborate with local leaders nationwide, elevate best practices, and develop scalable solutions that address racial disparities while empowering communities at the local level.”
