Here we snow again.
The first significant snowfall has arrived in Upstate New York — well, in the mountains at least.
The ASRC Whiteface Mountain Field Station reported a coating of snow atop the Adirondack High Peak early Thursday morning. At 4,867 feet, Whiteface is the fifth-highest mountain in New York and apparently, the first to break out the winter look.
A layer of powder covered the popular tourist site, signaling that fall foliage season is nearing its end. As of Thursday afternoon, the summit’s live camera was still blocked by the wintry weather — just a white screen of snow.
Snow this early isn’t all that unusual in the higher elevations of the Adirondacks. Last year, flakes fell even before the official start of fall, delighting skiers and shocking everyone still wearing shorts.

This week’s snowfall sparked a flurry of reactions online. On Whiteface Mountain’s official social media accounts, snow lovers rejoiced.
“Didn’t expect to open Instagram and have tears of joy this morning, but here we are folks,” one user wrote.

Others were less thrilled. The New York State Department of Transportation shared photos of the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway, a roadway that just weeks ago was full of summer tourists and leaf peepers, now blanketed in white.
“Not happy at all. I hate winter,” one Facebook user wrote.
“Horrid,” another replied simply.
For those counting down the days until ski season, though, this is the sign they’ve been waiting for. Season passes are already available on Whiteface website, and the mountain is expected to open for skiing later this fall, weather permitting, of course.
