Waymo has spent years and millions lobbying New York State, but a union-backed mayor may yet prove its toughest obstacle of all. By Stewart Burnett

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has withdrawn a proposal that would have allowed commercial robotaxi services to operate in parts of the state outside New York City, dealing a setback to Waymo just weeks after it closed a US$16bn funding round. The proposal, introduced in January as part of the state’s executive budget, would have permitted companies to seek local government approval for limited autonomous vehicle deployments upstate.
