THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — A Bronx man will spend more than two decades in prison for killing his wife, a rookie NYPD officer, four years ago, authorities said.
Argenis Baez, 37, was sentenced Thursday to 24 years in prison for fatally stabbing his estranged wife, 31-year-old Arianna Reyes-Gomez, in June 2022, prosecutors said. He pleaded to first-degree manslaughter last month.
Baez attacked Reyes-Gomez after waiting for her outside her apartment building in Concourse Village at around 2:50 a.m. on June 13, 2022.
The rookie officer was stabbed multiple times in the chest, leg, and back, prosecutors said. She found the strength to call her cousin, who then called 911, but by the time the police arrived, it was already too late.
Reyes-Gomez was found unconscious and unresponsive with multiple stab wounds on her body. The couple shared a 3-year-old son, who was not home at the time of the incident.
Baez was spotted on surveillance video leaving the building with a knife in his right hand, authorities said. He turned himself in on the same day of the attack.
“This is an incredibly tragic case. Officer Reyes Gomez, a mother who was just beginning her career in law enforcement, was stabbed to death by her estranged husband, leaving their toddler son to grow up without her. Hopefully, this sentence will bring some solace to her family, who have turned their pain into purpose by supporting efforts against domestic violence,” Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark said.
Baez was also sentenced to five years of post-release supervision. His attorney could not be reached on Friday.
