A construction worker fell to his death Thursday morning in Manhattan at the site of the Gateway Tunnel project on the west side, multiple agencies confirmed.

Work has since been suspended at the Hudson Yards construction site after the man fell to the bottom of a 60-foot pit, according to FDNY officials. The worker was found at the pit after FDNY crews rushed down stairs to reach the bottom.

First responders performed CPR before the worker could be hoisted up out of the pit, FDNY Battalion Chief Anthony Romano told media. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he was ultimately pronounced dead.

At a briefing, the FDNY did not know what led to the person’s deadly fall.

“The Gateway Development Commission, Amtrak, and Related Companies extend our profound condolences to the family of the worker who suffered a fatal injury on the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing project today. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time,” a joint statement from the three agencies said.

Councilmember Erik Bottcher said a city investigation would be conducted to “make sure accountability and worker safety remain top priorities.”

The tunnel project is part of a long-running operation to replace the damaged tunnels across the Hudson River.
