NEW YORK (PIX11) — A blizzard warning has been issued for New York City and Long Island as a winter nor’easter is set to bring 13 to 18 inches of snow and 55 mph winds, according to the National Weather Service and PIX11 meteorologists.

The blizzard warning will be in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday for Long Island, New York City and southern Connecticut. A winter storm warning has also been issued for southern Westchester, the Lower Hudson Valley and interior southern Connecticut.

The worst impacts are expected Sunday night into Monday morning with blowing snow, near zero visibility and whiteout conditions, PIX11 meteorologists say. Travel may become life-threatening, with power outages and tree damage possible.

Widespread coastal flooding will also be possible between Sunday night and Monday morning, particularly along Jamaica Bay, Staten Island, the Battery, and parts of the Bronx and northern Queens. Commutes are expected to be severely impacted on Monday morning and in the evening.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani previously announced that pre-snow operations will begin on Saturday with loading salt spreaders. On Sunday, more than 5,000 sanitation workers will move to rotating 12-hour shifts to keep streets clear.

The New York City Office of Emergency Management is advising residents to stay indoors if possible on Sunday and limit travel during heavy snow as well as make alternative plans for Monday for travel, work and family care. New Yorkers are also encouraged to sign up for Notify NYC alerts.

Mamdani is set to give a weather briefing at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, which will be streamed live on PIX11.com.
