NEW YORK (PIX11) — A state of emergency has been declared for New York amid an extended blizzard warning, Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Saturday.

The state of emergency covers 22 counties across New York and comes with the activation of 100 members of the New York State National Guard and the deployment of 25 vehicles to support downstate response operations.

Beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday, all empty commercial vehicles and tandem tractor-trailers will be banned from travel on I-84 and all roads south of I-84, including the thruway. This includes the Long Island Expressway and the Cross Bronx Expressway. All commercial vehicles will be restricted to the right lane only.

New York is projected to get between 13 to 17 inches of snow between Sunday and Monday, with a slight chance of those accumulations rising to 23 to 24 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

The blizzard warning will be in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday for Long Island, New York City, Westchester and the Hudson Valley.

The worst impacts are expected Sunday night into Monday morning with blowing snow, near zero visibility and whiteout conditions, PIX11 meteorologists say. Travel may become life-threatening, with power outages and tree damage possible.

Widespread coastal flooding will also be possible between Sunday night and Monday morning, particularly along Jamaica Bay, Staten Island, the Battery, and parts of the Bronx and northern Queens. Additional locations such as Coney Island, Massapequa, Sayville, Westhampton and Montauk could also be especially hard hit.

Hochul encouraged residents along the shore of Long Island to evacuate the area if possible.

“This is one to take seriously. A blizzard can truly paralyze an entire region,” the governor said on Saturday.

The MTA warned of possible changes to subway, rail and bus service, although crews are ready to respond to any impacts between Sunday and Monday. Express subway service may run local on Sunday and Monday, MTA Chair Janno Lieber announced on Saturday.

The Long Island Rail Road will run on a weekend schedule while various Metro-North Lines will run on alternate service, Lieber said.
