When New York Fashion Week wrapped last week, I had one thing on my mind: How do I get the look now?
Designers from Danielle Kallmeyer to Joseph Altuzarra to Ashlynn Park delivered collections filled with desirable wardrobe builders—fresh iterations not only of key pieces, but also of how to style them.
It was a big week for New York over all. Marc Jacobs kicked things off by giving us the nostalgia we didn’t know we needed. Ralph Lauren presented updates to all of our favorite heritage styles. Michael Kors celebrated 45 years and reminded us of the power of New York City glamour. And the new generation of tentpole designers had us running to preorder our favorite pieces, like Colleen Allen’s bustle bag, the argyle and striped sweaters at Zankov, the sporty separates at Lii, and just about everything from Rachel Scott’s Diotima collection.
Below, I’ve rounded up ten of my favorite trends, styling points, and key pieces from New York Fashion Week—and offered tips for how to start incorporating them into your wardrobe.
Ladylike Bits & Bobs

Right now, we’re excited about preppy, maximalist layering (it’s how we’re wearing our shirts this spring), but Kallmeyer and Altuzarra made the case for a more ladylike approach to putting things together. In their shows, it was all about doubling up on polished accessories and tailored shirting. I loved the way some of the models at Kallmeyer held their gloves alongside their bag—so sophisticated—and I’m already planning to layer simple shirts in muted colors as we transition into spring.

This one-of-a-kind piece caused lots of excitement at the Bazaar team’s appointment with Colleen Allen. The bag has longer straps that allow you to carry it like a crossbody, but the coolest way to wear it is around your waist at the back, like a bustle. It’s romantic and practical all at once.

In between shows, the streets were quite literally crawling with leopard print; it was one of the biggest trends we saw on showgoers. And on the runways, it was everywhere from Ralph Lauren’s classic cropped jacket to Anna Sui’s remixed cape coat. We even saw it on footwear via one of our favorite shoe designers, Trevor Houston, who dedicated a portion of his Herbert Levine collection to the print.

Lii
At the Lii show, designer Zane Li gave American sportswear a refresh. Leaning into sporty zipped jackets, neoprene tops, and rugby shirts, he made the case that these more athletic silhouettes deserve to appear in a chicer context. To try this at home now, dress up a ringer T-shirt and twill jacket with a pair of pop-of-color gloves for some added flair.

The accessory that tied everything together on the runway this season was a brooch. We often saw them holding together a scarf over a jacket or coat, but they looked equally chic on lapels and sweaters at the Tory Burch show.

From the layered argyle sweaters at Zankov to the madras plaid pants at J.Press, there were playful preppy details throughout the collections that balanced more buttoned-up silhouettes. Update your shirting wardrobe with a pop of plaid, or swap in a ribbon belt for a graphic detail to break up your look.

While our shell necklaces are on vacation until we pull them back out for the summertime, long necklaces with stone pendants and beading with fringe are the winter equivalent. They’re the perfect way to elevate a classic sweater or T-shirt with vintage jeans when you’re going to the office.

The fall/winter shows reminded us that there are so many directional ways to style scarves. Tie one over your pants like a belt, tie a few together to make a top, or drape one over your sweater and secure it with a ringed holder. If this all feels too daunting, you can always buy a scarf top that does the work for you—those are trending, too.

In the same way that it feels cool to go casual for a night out (like wearing a button-down with a maxi skirt to a black-tie affair), wearing dressed-up separates for the daytime gives your look a sophisticated twist. Whether you swap your loafers for a pair of patent-leather shoes for the office, or wear luxe pants with a white T-shirt for a day around the city, there’s something chic about going against the dress code.
