An active and ongoing investigation is underway after a pedestrian was struck and killed on the New Jersey Turnpike Saturday night.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred just before 9:30 p.m. on the southbound outer roadway near mile marker 100.5.Â

Authorities say an individual exited a vehicle and was subsequently struck by multiple passing vehicles, triggering a chain reaction that led to several additional crashes in the area.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and performed CPR on the victim, but those lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.Â

The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding why the person exited the vehicle and the sequence of events that followed, remain under investigation by the New Jersey State Police.
