New York City and the rest of the Northeast is bracing for an intense nor’easter forecast to bring blizzard conditions Sunday evening into Monday. States of emergency have been declared for the city, Long Island, the Hudson Valley and all of New Jersey.
Authorities in both states are urging people to stay home during the storm, as travel is expected to be dangerous and difficult. Transit agencies have already planned modified schedules for Monday, and warn that further cancellations and changes could come depending on the weather.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is expected to decide whether to move Monday’s public school classes to remote learning by noon Sunday.
People planning to fly in or out of the region should check with their airline, as hundreds of cancellations and delays were already reported at the region’s airports Sunday morning. Rail travelers should check service with Amtrak, which has begun modifying or cancelling trips on Sunday and Monday.

State offices will be closed on Monday.NJ Transit says it will continue service as long as the weather allows, but cancellations are expected to be announced later Sunday.Hudson County Community College has closed its campus as of Sunday, but remote work and classes will continue as scheduled.The FAA is expecting to issue groundstops at Newark Liberty and Teterboro airports later Sunday.Commercial vehicles banned from highways across the state starting at 3pm Sunday.Rutgers has asked its departments to pivot to remote work and learning where possible. University buses will be cancelled starting late Sunday.Paterson Public Schools will be closed Monday.
