NEW YORK (PIX11) — Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued a travel ban in New York City ahead of the nor’easter expected to dump up to 2 feet of snow on the region.
The travel ban begins at 9 p.m. Sunday and will end at 12 p.m. Monday, the mayor said. Long Island and Westchester are also under a travel ban beginning at 9 p.m., Gov. Kathy Hochul said.
A state of emergency has been declared for New York City, meaning highways and bridges will be closed to all vehicles. Hochul also issued a state of emergency for the downstate region.
“We are asking New Yorkers to avoid all non-essential travel,” Mamdani said.
New York City and Long Island are under a blizzard warning from Sunday morning until Monday morning, with 18 to 24 inches of snow possible for much of the region, PIX11 meteorologists say.
The nor’easter is also expected to bring wind gusts up to 55 mph. Officials urged residents to stay home and off the roads.
Heavy snow, strong winds, and near-whiteout conditions are expected, with the worst impacts from Sunday night through Monday morning. The heaviest snowfall is expected between 10 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. Monday, with potential bursts of 2 to 3 inches per hour.
