Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, often called AEP, officially kicked off on October 15. For thousands of Queens residents who are at least 65 years old and eligible for the federal health insurance program, this is the time of year to select or renew health plan coverage.
Whether making a decision for yourself, or helping an older relative, there’s a lot to consider. Frank Polanco, senior vice president at Elderplan/HomeFirst, a not-for-profit health plan with deep roots in Queens, answers top questions to help you make this important decision.
What is the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period and why does it matter?
It’s a big deal and you don’t want to rush your selection! Why? Because there are a lot of options, you have less than eight weeks to choose, and you really want to be sure you’re making the right decision, for example, about a Medicare Advantage plan. Mark your calendars because the enrollment period only happens from October 15 to December 7!
What should you consider when choosing a health plan?
We don’t have to tell you: a lot can change in a year! An easy way to choose a health plan that’s right for you is to reflect, research, and then enroll. What does this mean? Reflect on your past year and how your health is changing. Research plans based on your current or expected needs. Then, enroll in a plan by December 7.
